Comprehensive Eye Examination Components

  • Vision without glasses and with glasses
  • Eye muscle motility
  • Visual Field - Side Vision
  • Eye alignment (Binocular Vision:  how well your eyes coordinate together.  Eye strain, headaches, double vision, fatigue, and eyelid twitching may be a result of poor eye coordination).
  • Pupil Responses

Anterior (Front) Segment of the Eye Evaluation:

  • Lids and Eyelashes
  • Meibomian Glands - surrounding "oil" glands (where styes happen)
  • Conjunctiva & Sclera - area of "white" (where pinguecula happen)
  • Cornea - transparent front surface of the eye
  • Iris - area of color that surrounds the pupil
  • Anterior Chamber - area where the fluid drains in the eye.  Important in some cases of glaucoma.

Intraocular ("inside-eye") Pressure - Screens for pressures that are asymmetric between the two eyes or higher than previous readings and/or expected values.  Important in diagnosis and management of glaucoma.

Eyeglass Refraction

  • Objective measurements are compared to your subjective choices of the lenses you prefer.
  • Many patients worry they "gave the wrong answer" during the subjective (better 1 or 2?) portion of the exam.
  • When the lenses are close to where they should be, they can often look very similar.  Do not worry!  The objective measurements will deter from inaccurate subjective choices.
  • Even if you are having a "bad" eye day, an "after" dilation objective reading will rule out any focusing issues that may have "thrown off" the subjective portion of the refraction.

Dilation of Pupils & Posterior (Back) Segment of the Eye Evaluation:

  • Lens - Posterior to the pupil and iris (where cataracts happen)
  • Optic Nerve - Nerve fibers that communicate "wire" to the brain and enable our vision (where glaucoma happens)
  • Macula -  Central part of the retina.  Responsible for detailed vision such as reading.  (where macular degeneration happens).
  • Arteries & Veins - Blood vessels in their natural state (especially important for patients being treated for, or are taking medications to control diabetes, cholesterol, blood pressure, or systemic illnesses that affect the blood vessels).
  • Vitreous - The fluid and fibers that are behind the pupil and in front of the retina.  (Condensation of this fluid is responsible for floaters and sometimes retinal detachments).
  • Retina - Internal tissue of the eye that encloses and interacts with the nerve fibers and other structures above.  Because the eye is a "sphere", the pupil must be widened (through dilation with eye drops) to properly evaluate.

Contact Lens Fittings & Evaluations

  • The contact lens fitting and evaluation process begins with determining the eyeglass prescription that best corrects your vision.
  • The eyeglass prescription is compared to your corneal measurements (shape of the front of your eyes).
  • The contact lens material, brand, power, base curve & diameter are calculated from these measurements.
  • A trial lens is given to be evaluated for centration, coverage, movement, & the vision it provides.
  • When both the patient and the doctor are satisfied with the vision, fit, & performance of the trial lens; a final contact lens prescription will be provided.  This process must be completed within 90 days.  This is important as the contact lens prescription is valid for one year.
  • Please remember to wear your contact lenses to your follow-up appointment (unless they are irritating you).  If you lose or tear a trial lens, call the office and let us know.
  • This is an essential part of the fitting process as it gives the patient an opportunity to trial the lens before making any purchase of lenses.  In addition, the follow-up appointment allows the Doctor to evaluate the lenses after worn for a longer period of time (insures proper fit).
  • Contact lenses often feel and fit differently after they are worn for hours.  This is the reason for and importance of the follow-up appointment.
  • There are many different types of contact lenses and we will work together to find the best lens for you.
  • The contact lenses must be evaluated for vision, fit and compatibility of the areas of the eye it rests upon; on an annual basis.
  • Contact lenses are medical devices.  Contact lens prescriptions are regulated in a similar fashion to prescriptions for medications.  Scarring of the cornea could lead to permanent vision loss.  The above process reduces complications associated with contact lenses and is designed to protect the health of your eyes.
  • The extent of a contact lens prescription and when a contact lens prescription can safely and accurately be written shall be left to the professional judgment of the licensed practitioner in the State of Florida.

Monovision, Bifocal, and Multi-focal Contact Lenses

  • Appropriate for patients who require a different amount of correction at different distances:
    • Distance (street signs, TV, movies, etc)
    • Intermediate (computers, car dashboards, ~ arm's length)
    • Near (reading, small print, near objects:  cell phones, etc)
  • The amount of magnification (power) required for near is greater than what is required for intermediate.  The power amount required for intermediate is greater than what is required for distance.
  • Progressive eyeglasses have an area designated for distance, intermediate and reading (seemless increase in magnification from top to bottom of the lens).
  • Contact Lens fittings for variable focal points are achieved by:
    • Finding the balance between clear distance vision and comfortable, clear & efficient near vision.
    • Therefore, this type of contact lens fitting often requires multiple contact lens follow-ups to train the brain to see "selectively".

Schedule of Fees
Comprehensive Eye Examination
 $ 79
Ask about Discounts for Previous Patients & Employees of The Promenade at Coconut Creek.  All comprehensive eye examinations will provide you with an eyeglass prescription.  Does not include a contact lens fitting or contact lens prescription.

Baseline Eye Pictures/Photographs

$ 20

All patients have the option of having a baseline "eye" picture taken.
The Doctor may strongly suggest a photograph for specific evaluation and treatment reasons.
When photos are taken of the internal (inside) portion of the eyes, any future changes are more easily detected.

Office Visits
Emergency Eye Care
Variable
Dependent on examination components required for evaluation and treatment.  Typically under $100 for evaluation, diagnosis and management.  Eye drops required for treatment are not included in the examination fee.  Our office does not bill vision or medical insurances for office visits.  Payment is expected at the time of service.  You may elect to submit for reimbursement from your insurance company, an itemized receipt will be provided.
Comprehensive Eye Examinations & Contact Lens Fittings:  Includes Prescriptions for both Eyeglasses & Contact Lenses.  Contact Lens Prescriptions are dispensed after contact lenses are determined to provide proper vision, fit and comfort.  Evaluation of these factors is determined at follow-up appointments.  Follow-up appointments are included within the examination fee when completed within 90 days.
Comprehensive Eye Examination, Spherical Contact Lens Fitting, Evaluation & Follow-up Care
$ 129
Spherical (one "power" per eye) contact lenses are those that do not correct for astigmatism or presbyopia.  Examples of such lenses are:  Air Optix, Avaira, Biofinity, Oasys, O2Optix, Proclear, Purevision and many others.
Comprehensive Eye Examination, Toric Contact Lens Fitting, Evaluation & Follow-up Care
$ 139
Toric contact lenses correct for astigmatism.  If you have two prescription numbers for one eye that are designated with an axis, you may have astigmatism.  For example, no astigmatism (-3.00) and astigmatism (-3.00-1.25x180).  These lenses are weighted to fit your eye at a certain axis point.  Examples of such lenses are:  Acuvue Oasys for Astigmatism, Air Optix for Astigmatism, Biofinity Toric, Biomedics Toric and many others.
Comprehensive Eye Examination and
Monovision, Bifocal or Multi-focal Contact Lens Fitting, Evaluation & Follow-up Care

$ 164
Contact lenses that compensate for presbyopia (decreased ability to focus on near objects:  computers, newspapers, cell-phones).  Utilizing eye-brain dominance to achieve clarity at different focal points:  distance, intermediate, and near.  Magnification that is required for near will blur distance vision and vice versa.  Therefore, this fitting process requires additional follow-up appointments to measure the success of the contact lenses during daily tasks.
